Father a physician and pioneer into sexual health at Croydon General hospital. Mother a sufragette and supporter of Marie Stopes. Vesta often accompanied her mother on votes for women protests and is hugley proud of the progressive attitude of her parents, which was heavily criticised in their time. As a child she cut her hair short and called herself Victor and was a keen Tennis player from an early age and reached the semi finals of the Middlesex girls Tennis championships. She is also an accomplished runner. She won a blue in both sports while at Sommerville, Oxford where she graduated with a degree in Philosophy in 1928. She got a job at the Manchester Guardian in 1929, initially writing women's pieces she wasn't happy with, but in the 30s she was able to add her own progressive spin to it. As well as running and Tennis she also plays Golf and swims daily. She is fiercly opinionated and often considered difficult and school marmish. She shuns the glamour side of Gridball and refuses to wear skirts, always in trousers. She married young in 1921 but divorced after having an affair in 1934 and openly states it was she who was at fault for the marriage failing.
