Hodgkinson was an all round athlete at school, excelling in rowing, swimming and athletics. She eventually chose the latter, winning a silver medal in the 80 metre hurdles at the 1948 London Olympic Games. After failing to make the team for the 52 games, Hodgkinson turned to Gridball and joined the Martlets. Her younger sister Anne will be a teammate in 1954
