Born Enid Percheron. French father, Durham mother of Irish ancestry. She married in 1941 and became a war widow in 1944, she met and married her second husband in 1945. Scored a hat-trick on her debut 1st March 1952 and by the time of Durham's demotion in 1953 was their record goalscorer, joint appearance record holder and oldest player to represent the club, but left for newly promoted Hull at the end of the season. Was hired by the BBC to interview the public at the coronation.

Virginia was a leading young badminton player from 1933 to 1939 before retiring from the sport . She retired from competition on marrying Baron James Chaytor-Carter in 1939, becoming Baroness Chaytor-Carter.
During the war her husband won the Victoria Cross for his actions on D-Day, though he was badly wounded. After years away from sport and a society life shaped by duty, Virginia divorced in 1952 and quietly returned to competition.
In 1953 she joined the Hull Flyers, helping them qualify for Senior Gridball
